In 2002, Artists of Utah opened its first 35 x 35 exhibition. Held at Artspace Forum Gallery, the exhibit presented works by thirty-five Utah artists under the age of 35, ranging from contemporary landscapes to large-scale multi-media pieces. After 7 years, Artists of Utah is once again bringing the younger generation of Utah artists into the spotlight. This exhibit, to be held at the Salt Lake Arts Council’s Finch Lane Gallery in September, will consider all modes of artistic expression alive in Utah, from photography and painting, to video works and performance.

Submission deadline is August 15, 2009. You will also find the call for entries and information about the exhibit online at http://www.artistsofutah.org/35x35

If (like our board members) you're already old enough to run for president, please forward this call to your younger friends, colleagues and students.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06383689995623842551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5392222904793420932.post-48684550190474184652009-07-10T11:10:00.000-07:002009-07-10T11:34:59.229-07:00Standing Still StandingWhat: Standing Still Standing

Where: Provo Theatre Company (105 East 100 North)

Why: In the last year or so, there has been an influx of new plays premiering in the Provo area. To the surprise of virtually everyone involved, many of them are really, QUITE good. This one has the creative team of one of the most successful, Little Happy Secrets, behind it, as well as people who've worked on local shows such as Rabbit Hole, The Fading Flower, and BYU's popular Divine Comedy group. This new comedy is bound to set the standards for new play development in Provo area even higher.

When: July 10th-July 27th - Thursdays & Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, and Mondays at 7:30 PM. Preview tickets are $5. Student/Senior discount is $2 off the regular ticket price with a valid ID. Group rates of 5 or more are available. Advanced purchase is recommended as performances may sell out. To purchase tickets or for more information visit bluelightstage.com or newplayproject.org.

Who: The creative team has given their production a PG-rating for mature themes, mild language, and brief drug references.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A press release for Standing Still Standing describes the show:

Moving between the waking world, the online community, and dreams, Standing Still Standing is the story of a marriage under siege from illness and insecurity. Ben and Grace have been married for three years—he’s slept through two. At least, that’s how it feels when you’re only awake three hours out of the day and the rest are filled with visions of Billy Joel, the Pope, and a cheese woman from Minnesota. Standing Still Standing is a comedy about love and life…and staying awake for both.

For more information, check out the show's blog at ssstanding.blogspot.com (be sure to check out the hillarious Jen Vlogs series). Also, for those of you interested in the creative process, be sure to attend the production's free post-show discussions on Thursdays, July 16 and 23; Saturday matinees, July 11, 18 and 25; and Mondays, July 13, 20 and 27.

Standing Still Standing is produced by Bluelight Stage and Leilani Productions with additional support from the New Play Project and Brigham Young University Experimental Theatre Company.Zobellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05503725810184768276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5392222904793420932.post-34744932486997367062009-06-30T12:34:00.000-07:002009-06-30T14:48:33.170-07:00A Pleathora of Pictures<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Conrad is not only the Art Director of the Downtown Business Alliance, but also a successful painter, whose large paintings dot the map across Utah and a few other states.
J.R. What have you been up to these days?
C.N. These past few weeks I have been involved in setting up the “art chase,” which is a special edition of the gallery stroll. We encourage locals to go around to every single art gallery, and you are entered in a drawing to win prizes if you go to all seventeen galleries.
J.R. Where do you see downtown Provo in five years?
C.N. In five years? I want to see it as bustling as any downtown can be. I’d like to see everything full. I’d like to see artwork up in public places. I’d like to see Center Street really grow in the gallery stroll to really get people going to not only appreciate the arts, but also support local businesses as well.
J.R. What is your personal favorite part of downtown Provo?
C.N. I’d say the old buildings. Unfortunately, in the past some have been taken down. We try and help restore old ones to their historic nature and help local businesses and galleries move in. A recent study showed that 17% of these historic buildings are vacant.
J.R. Word on the street is, your favorite TV show is The Office. What character is most like you, and why?
C.N. I relate best with Andy…dumb pranks, and kind of obtuse humor.
J.R. Do the clothes make the man?
C.N. Yes, they do.
J.R. What else do you want the world to know?
C.N. Art is the integral part of a successful downtown, and it’s great to see people get excited as they get involved with it. I personally am excited for the downtown; it has a lot going for it. The arts are just a great way to communicate with people and create a unity that is self-sustaining, and it keeps people involved within that community.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06383689995623842551noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5392222904793420932.post-85444830495837022322009-04-03T09:39:00.000-07:002009-04-03T09:42:31.411-07:00Mountain West Conference on the Arts, May 7Utah Arts Council

Thursday, May 7, 2009
7:00 - 12:30 pm
Registration Open
7:00 am
Continental Breakfast
7:50 - 8:00 am Welcome Address
8:00 - 9:00 am

Caucus Session
Needs Assessment for the Arts Community
Richard Sline, Ph.D. - Associate Professor of Communication, Weber State University
9:00 - 9:15 am
Break
9:15 - 10:30 am
Sessions, Workshops, Briefings

Arts & Aging: The Older Adult as an Under-Appreciated Asset in the Creative Economy
Barbara Drake - RSVP/Bridges Program Manager, Salt Lake County Aging Services
Ron Frederickson, Ph.D. - Professor of Theatre Emeriuts Emporia State University: Adjunct Faculty, University of Utah Theatre Department
Jayne Luke - Artistic Director, Walk-Ons Inc.

Utah's Creative Economy: Picturing Yourself in the New Cultural Landscape (Session repeats)
Holly Sidford - President, Helicon Collaborative

Ten Mega-Trends Affecting the Arts
Kelly Barsdate - Chief Program & Planning Officer, National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, NASAA

Creating the Mural: Art as a Catalyst for Community Revitalization
Lily Yeh - Founding Director, Barefoot Artists, Inc.
Ruby Chacon - Freelance Community Artist, Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts (MICA) Board Chair/Volunteer Co Director

10:30 - 10:45 am

Break
10:45 - 12:00 pm
Sessions, Workshops, Briefings

Imagining Effective Residencies
Erik Stern - Professor, Dance at Weber State University: Co-artistic Director, Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble

Utah's Creative Economy: Picturing Yourself in the New Cultural Landscape (Repeat session)
Holly Sidford - President, Helicon Collaborative

Social Networking and the Arts: Making it Work for You
Pete Codella, APR - Owner / Partner, Codella Marketing
Brian Seethaler - Director, Redirect Community

Local Arts Council Summit: Navigating the Arts Stimulus Funding (All conference attendees welcome)
Shannon Daut - Deputy Director, Western States Arts Federation
Lynnette Hiskey - Assistant Director, Division of Arts and Museums
Katie Woslager - Grants Manager, Division of Arts and Museums
Nancy Boskoff - Director, Salt Lake City Arts Council
12:00 - 1:15 pm

Governor's Leadership in the Arts Awards Luncheon

Poetry Out Loud
Janna Tessman, 2009 POL state champion

State of the Arts Address
Margaret Hunt, Director, Utah Division of Arts and Museums

Governor's Leadership in the Arts Awards
An event honoring dedicated leaders in our community who continually strive to inspire and support the arts.
1:15 - 2:15 pm
Keynote Address
"Healing and Community Building Through Creative Action"

Lily Yeh
Artist, social change activist, founder- The Village of Arts and Humanities, and Barefoot Artists

“When I see brokenness, poverty and crime in inner cities, I also see the enormous potential and readiness for transformation and rebirth. They are less common around here than in places like Seattle, San Francisco, etc. but sometimes we get lucky.

The first list is for bigger names, and the second one is for local bands/artists. There is a surprisingly good but underrated local music scene here and I think we should all take advantage of that, and of course support them in what they do.

These lists change all the time. To get the most up-to-date information come back frequently, and of course do your own research and let us know what you find! However, the best way to make sure we don't miss any, especially for bands that aren't as well known, is to visit their specific websites. Please add to this list!

Disclaimer time! If you think there should be some more on here that were in fact listed on the websites I visited or whatever either I haven't heard of them (likely), I haven't checked those sites in a while, or I don't think they're within this kind of genre, which seems to be mostly indie-ish, folky, I guess.. I don't know, whatever. But yeah so bands that I don't think fit at all with that I probably won't add, but it's not because I'm a jerk (I may even like them myself), I just want this to be useful. She is truly a scholar of new media art, and will be speaking about our April exhibit, FORMS OF MELANCHOLY, an international new media group exhibit curated by Chris Coy.

"Marisa Olson's work combines performance, video, net art, sound, drawing, and installation to address the cultural history of technology, the politics of participation within pop culture, and the aesthetics of failure.

Her work has recently been presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Pompidou-Paris, New Museum of Contemporary Art, 52nd International Biennale di Venezia, National Museum of Contemporary Art (Athens, Greece), Edith Russ-Haus fur Medienkunst, Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst/ Montevideo, the British Film Institute, the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive, the Sundance Film Festival, and elsewhere. She is also a founding member of the Nasty Nets "internet surfing club" whose new DVD recently premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival. Her work has been written about in ArtForum, Art in America, Folha de Sao Paolo, Liberation-Paris, the Village Voice, New York Magazine, and elsewhere. While Wired has called her both funny and humorous, the New York Times has called her "anything but stupid." Marisa studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College-London, History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz, and Rhetoric at UC Berkeley. Her critiques of contemporary art and digital visual culture have extended to writing for Flash Art, Art Review, Afterimage, Planet, and Art on Paper and to curating exhibitions and programs at the Guggenheim, SFMOMA, White Columns, Artists Space, the Performa Biennial, SF Camerawork, and Rhizome.

Marisa was born in Germany and lives in New York."

See you at the lecture!

and dont forget... When seen as a tool for artistic production, Café Press proposes an interesting center for a discussion of object creation "after the Internet." The site and its user community celebrate the ease and immediacy of invisibly manufactured items - t-shirts, teddy bears, mugs - made in narrowly prescribed forms. Adding to the discussion of pitiable commodity, philosopher Nicolas Bourriaud brings to light the consequences of the advances we have made... Advances in technology have "blindly replace[d] human labour by machines," leaving us with mere "forms of melancholy."

This month's installation at Sego offers up these "forms of melancholy" as designed by the artists in the exhibition. Given no regulations beyond the limitations of customization on CafePress.com, the artists have designated works for manufacture and, more specifically, purchase on the website and in the space of the Art Center.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06383689995623842551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5392222904793420932.post-15836805722147412112009-04-02T09:46:00.000-07:002009-04-02T10:22:54.642-07:00Vern at the Bridge

The Bridge is Proud to Present
Dr. Vern Swanson

Dr. Swanson is a noted authority on the art of Utah, Russian art, and Nineteenth Century European Art. As you may know we are constantly fundraising. I’m writing this to ask you to donate just 10 dollars to the Sego Art Center. In this economic time everyone is hurting. I wouldn’t be asking for this donation if I didn’t believe that Sego is a key element in Provo, not only now, but in the revitalization process that the city truly is going through. Recently Sego presented to the city council. We were warmly received, below is a few of the hard numbers and facts that we presented to them:

The Annual Sego Music Festival- 2009 will be Sego’s fourth Music Festival, 2008 had about 8K attendees- there were no police reports within the two festival days for the previous three years.

Sego Art Center- Opened in May 2008, exhibiting and educating the Provo Community about contemporary art. Quickly Sego became one of the most respected Visual Art Institutions in the State (City Weekly’s award for best new gallery).

Monthly attendance ranges between 600-1400, we are looking to have 10,000 visitors in our first year

In the past few months opening night attendance is between 380 and 940. This is compared to the Salt Lake City Art Center, with attendance recently struggling between 100-150 -on their opening receptions/Salt Lake City gallery stroll. (The Salt Lake City Art Center has a budget around 2 million dollars.)

Sego is run on 100% volunteer hours in the past 9 months we have amassed 11,000 total hours. Our operating Expenses for 2008 are less then $15,000 (funded by Grassroots Funding, Studio Space Rental, and Personnel out-of-pocket cash). We have a $0 marketing budget- all marketing is viral.

Our 5 year goal is to have: a paid, full-time Art Center staff, full community education programming, and finally -transition into a new facility- Possibly the Historic Carnegie Library, or similar building (within Downtown Provo).

As you can readily see, Sego is aggressively and very effectively promoting the arts on a barebones budget, through generous donations from people like you. Every dollar helps.

Please donate by following the links below.
Facebook
Or if you would rather donate anonymously please visit our website

Thanks again for all that you do! We Hope to see you at Sego, either at gallery stroll, one of our artist lectures, one of our many other activities, or even as a volunteer or member.

Cheers -ConradAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06383689995623842551noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5392222904793420932.post-7560282055751232082009-02-18T09:22:00.000-08:002009-02-18T09:31:14.898-08:00Shady Chapel, Matt Weidauer, Drew Capener, Michael Bradford at VELOUR
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
8:00pm - 11:00pm
Velour, Provo

Shady Chapel, Matt Weidauer, Drew Capener, Michael Bradford VELOUR
5$
visit the links below:

drewcapener.com
myspace.com/thecolorgypsy
myspace.com/shadychapel
myspace.com/mattweidauerAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06383689995623842551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5392222904793420932.post-58653409688301595162009-02-17T12:35:00.001-08:002009-02-18T09:32:55.557-08:002 LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS:Provo life drawers- we will probably have 2 drawing sessions this week. The center is open(2-8pm Tues-Sat), and we'd be glad to accept a donation in person. Call 801.599.0680 if you have any questions.
